Detailed Itinerary
Arrival in Manali, Bike Handover & Briefing
Arrive in Manali independently. Check into the hotel and meet the support team. In the afternoon, we assign your Royal Enfield motorcycles, help you mount saddlebags, and run a brief test ride up the Solang Valley. Evening briefing covers the technical demands of Shinku La and the remote nature of the Zanskar leg — this route carries no petrol pumps or mechanics between Darcha and Padum, so gear and bike checks are thorough.
Manali to Darcha (Entering Lahaul Valley)
An early start through the Solang Valley and the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel, exiting into the dry Chandra River basin at Gramphu. We follow tarmac through Tandi — the last petrol pump before the Zanskar off-road stretch — and on to Keylong and Darcha, the last village before the road turns unpaved toward Shinku La. Tanks and jerry cans are topped off here; this is your last fuel point for two days.
Darcha to Padum (Crossing Shinku La)
The hardest riding day of the trip. Leaving the tarmac at Darcha, we climb a rough, unpaved trail with glacier-fed water crossings to the summit of Shinku La (5,054m / 16,580 ft) — a technical, exposed pass with no rescue infrastructure. We descend through deep Zanskar gorges to reach Padum, the ancient valley capital. Full off-road riding gear and prior technical-terrain experience are mandatory for this leg.
Padum Local Exploration (Monasteries & Forts)
A relaxed recovery day after Shinku La. We ride to the cliffside Karsha Monastery and Sani Monastery, and explore Zanskari village life — a region seen by a fraction of the riders who visit the standard Nubra-Pangong circuit.
Phugtal Cave Monastery Trekking Day (Optional)
We ride along the river gorge to Cha village, then trek on foot (5 km each way) to the Phugtal Monastery, built into a cave mouth in a sheer cliff face. We return to Padum in the evening. Riders who prefer rest can stay back in Padum.
Padum to Rangdum (Crossing Pensi La)
We climb Pensi La (4,400m / 14,435 ft), overlooking the vast Drang-Drung Glacier, and descend into the isolated hamlet of Rangdum with its fortress-like monastery — a night under some of the darkest skies on the route.
Rangdum to Kargil (Suru Valley)
Riding the Suru River basin back onto tarmac, past Balti villages with views of the Nun and Kun twin peaks, we reach Kargil — rejoining the main Ladakh-Kashmir highway network after three days off-grid.
Kargil to Leh (Lamayuru, Magnetic Hill & Sangam)
Smooth asphalt today. We climb Namika La (3,700m) and Fotu La (4,108m) — the highest point on NH1 — and stop at Lamayuru to see its yellow, moon-like soil formations. We continue along the Indus River past Magnetic Hill and the Sangam confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers into Leh.
Leh Rest Day & Old Town Exploration
A deliberately unhurried day after eight days on the road. Explore Leh Palace and the old town bazaar on foot, ride up to Shanti Stupa for sunset, and let the mechanic team give your motorcycle a full post-Zanskar service check before the highway leg out to Kashmir.
Leh to Kargil (Retracing Lamayuru)
We head back west along NH1, re-crossing Fotu La and Namika La with Lamayuru's Moonland in different afternoon light, back down to Kargil for the night before tomorrow's crossing into Kashmir.
Kargil to Srinagar (Zoji La & Dal Lake)
We pay respects at the Drass War Memorial before climbing the narrow, muddy switchbacks of Zoji La Pass (3,528m). Past Sonamarg's meadows, the road descends into lush Kashmiri valleys and apple orchards, ending at a traditional wooden houseboat on Dal Lake, Srinagar — a striking contrast to the cold desert we started in.
Departure from Srinagar
Our traverse concludes today. After breakfast and a final Shikara ride on Dal Lake, we organize transfers to Srinagar Airport for your onward flight, carrying home one of the most remote and technical motorcycle journeys in the Himalayas.
RIDE FOOTAGE
Why Ride This Instead of Nubra-Pangong?
The standard Nubra-Pangong circuit is fully paved and carries the heaviest rider traffic in Ladakh. This traverse crosses the unpaved, technical Shinku La pass (16,580 ft) into remote Zanskar, then exits through two legendary highways — a route very few riders take.
- 🏔️ Genuinely off-beat: Minimal rider traffic vs. the crowded standard circuit.
- ⚠️ Experienced riders only: Prior high-altitude/off-road experience strongly recommended.
- 📅 Season: Shinku La is typically open mid-June to late September, weather permitting.
- 💬 Custom-quoted: Priced by hotel tier & group size — no fixed group departures, since road conditions vary year to year.
