The Off-Beat Ladakh Route: Zanskar via Shinku La

Quick Answer: What Is the Zanskar-Shinku La Off-Beat Route?
It's a one-way, 12-day motorcycle traverse from Manali to Srinagar via Darcha, the unpaved Shinku La pass (5,054m/16,580ft), and the remote Zanskar valley (Padum, Pensi La, Rangdum), then on to Leh and out through Lamayuru to Kashmir. Unlike the standard Nubra Valley–Pangong Tso circuit that most first-time riders do, this route sees a fraction of the traffic, involves genuine unpaved high-altitude riding, and is recommended for experienced riders only. It is offered by Ladakh Bikers as a private, custom-quoted expedition — see the full itinerary.
Every second rider who writes to us wants the same three names: Khardung La, Nubra, Pangong. They're spectacular — and they're also the most photographed, most crowded, most "seen it in every reel" stretch of Ladakh. If you've already done a Ladakh trip, or you're the kind of rider who picks a destination specifically because it's hard to get to, there's a different question worth asking: what does almost nobody ride?
The answer is Zanskar, entered the hard way — over Shinku La from the Manali side, not the easier Kargil approach most Zanskar tours use.
Why This Route Instead of Nubra-Pangong
| Parameter | Standard Nubra–Pangong Circuit | Zanskar–Shinku La Traverse |
|---|---|---|
| Road surface | Fully paved, tarmac throughout | Unpaved, technical trail over Shinku La with river crossings |
| Rider traffic | Heavy — the most-ridden circuit in Ladakh | Very light — most riders never take this approach into Zanskar |
| Duration | 3–4 days as an add-on from Leh | 12 days, point-to-point Manali to Srinagar |
| Support infrastructure | Dhabas, fuel & phone signal along most of the route | No fuel or mechanic support between Darcha and Padum — self-sufficient riding required |
| Rider experience needed | Suitable for first-time Himalayan riders | Prior off-road / technical-terrain experience strongly recommended |
| Foreign national access | Requires Protected Area Permit (PAP), 2-person minimum | Inner Line Permit for Zanskar sections; same PAP rules apply in restricted zones |
The Route in Brief
The traverse runs Manali → Darcha → Shinku La → Padum → Leh → Lamayuru → Kargil → Srinagar. You leave the Manali-Leh highway at Darcha — the last fuel stop for two days — and climb an unpaved trail to Shinku La, a technical, exposed 5,054m pass with zero rescue infrastructure. Beyond it, you drop into the Zanskar valley proper: Padum, the cliffside Karsha and Sani monasteries, and — for riders with an extra day — a 10km round-trip trek to the cave monastery at Phugtal. From Padum, the only way back to the highway network is via Pensi La and the Suru Valley into Kargil, where you rejoin NH1 for Leh. After a rest day in Leh's old town, the route heads back out through Lamayuru a second time and exits via Zoji La into Kashmir, ending on a houseboat on Dal Lake, Srinagar.
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Ride This
This is not a first Ladakh trip. We recommend it to riders who have already done at least one high-altitude Himalayan expedition (Manali-Leh, Srinagar-Leh, or similar) and are comfortable on loose gravel, sand, and glacial water crossings without backup vehicle support at every point. If that's not you yet, our Manali to Leh Highway Expedition or Srinagar to Leh Highway Expedition are better first rides — you can always come back for Zanskar once you know what high-altitude riding actually feels like.
Season & Permits
Shinku La is only open roughly mid-June through late September, and can close early after fresh snowfall — we confirm road status directly with our Zanskar contacts before each departure. Foreign nationals need the same Protected Area Permit rules that apply elsewhere in Ladakh's restricted zones; our team handles Inner Line Permit and PAP processing as part of the guided package. Because road conditions vary year to year, this trip runs as a private, custom-quoted expedition rather than a fixed-price group departure — contact us with your dates and we'll confirm feasibility and pricing based on your group size and hotel preference.

Safety Advisory
Road conditions in Ladakh fluctuate daily due to stream crossings, landslides, and weather. Always consult local checkpoint officers or message our Leh base camp for real-time conditions before leaving Leh.
