Leh to Leh 8-Day Ladakh Bike Expedition

The most-booked shape of Ladakh bike trip for Indian riders: an 8-day, 990 km loop that starts and ends at Leh airport, so every day of leave is spent riding instead of reaching. It covers the full high-altitude set — Khardung La, Nubra Valley, the Shyok river route, Pangong Tso, Rezang La, Hanle and Umling La (19,024 ft) — with a rest-and-sightseeing day in Leh up front for acclimatization and two nights in Hanle so Umling La gets its own unhurried day. All-inclusive: Royal Enfield with fuel, stays, breakfast and dinner, riding gear, Inner Line Permits, backup vehicle, mechanic and oxygen.

Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrive Leh (IXL) — Mandatory Rest, Bike Handover & Safety Briefing

0 kmALTITUDE: 3,500m / 11,500 ft

Fly into Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport and transfer to the hotel. Today you do nothing, on purpose: Leh sits at 3,500m and the flight puts you there in ninety minutes from the plains, so the whole day is rest, water and light food. Skip alcohol and heavy meals. In the evening we hand over your Royal Enfield, fit your saddlebags and riding gear, and run the safety and rescue briefing — AMS symptoms and what to do about them, convoy signals, water-crossing technique, and the backup-vehicle protocol — followed by the group dinner. Your Aadhaar or passport is collected tonight for permit processing.

🏨 Night Stay: Ladakh Bikers Base Camp Hotel, Leh
DAY 2

Leh Local Sightseeing — Sangam, Magnetic Hill, Shanti Stupa & Permit Day

80 kmALTITUDE: 3,500m / 11,500 ft

A short, low-stress ride day that doubles as your second acclimatization day while our team files your Inner Line Permits at the DC office. We ride the NH1 loop west to Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, stop at Magnetic Hill, and continue to Sangam — the confluence where the clear green Indus meets the silt-grey Zanskar. On the way back we visit the Hall of Fame army museum, then Leh Palace (the nine-storey royal palace built around 1600 AD) and Shanti Stupa for sunset over the valley. Evening free in Leh market for last-minute gear, dry fruits and a SIM top-up — mobile data effectively ends after tomorrow.

🏨 Night Stay: Ladakh Bikers Base Camp Hotel, Leh
DAY 3

Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La Pass (17,582 ft)

130 kmALTITUDE: 3,150m / 10,330 ft

The first real pass day, and the smoothest tarmac of the whole trip. We climb 39 km north out of Leh to Khardung La (5,359m / 17,582 ft) — one of the highest motorable passes in the world — keeping the summit stop to 15-20 minutes, because standing around at 17,500 ft is how riders invite a headache that ruins day four. The descent into Nubra is a long, dramatic drop into the Shyok basin. Afternoon at Diskit Monastery below the 32m Maitreya Buddha, then the Hunder sand dunes for a Bactrian camel ride and sunset. Overnight in a Nubra camp or hotel.

🏨 Night Stay: Hunder Desert Camp / Hotel, Nubra Valley
DAY 4

Nubra to Pangong Tso via the Shyok River Route

180 kmALTITUDE: 4,250m / 13,940 ft

The best-kept riding day in Ladakh. Instead of backtracking over Khardung La, we take the Shyok river route east through Shyok village — a road only opened to tourists in recent years — running for hours between bare rock walls, grasslands and the braided river. Expect several unbridged water crossings; the tour leader picks the line and the backup vehicle stays behind the group. We reach Pangong Tso by evening, stop at the 3 Idiots point, then check into a camp right on the shore at Spangmik. Carry a windproof layer: the lake at 4,250m gets cold fast after sunset, and the stars over it are the reason people remember this night.

🏨 Night Stay: Lakeshore Camp, Spangmik, Pangong Tso
DAY 5

Pangong to Hanle via Chushul & Rezang La War Memorial

170 kmALTITUDE: 4,500m / 14,764 ft

We ride the length of the southern shore, then turn inland through Chushul — one of the most remote and moving stretches of the trip. We stop at the Rezang La war memorial, where 114 men of 13 Kumaon held the position in the 1962 war, before crossing the open Changthang plateau to Hanle. Kiang (wild ass) and Tibetan gazelle are common along here. Reach Hanle by evening; the rest of the day is yours to walk up to the Indian Astronomical Observatory and the 17th-century Hanle monastery on the ridge. Hanle is a designated Dark Sky Reserve — outdoor white lights are restricted — so the Milky Way here is as clear as anywhere in India.

🏨 Night Stay: Hanle Homestay / Guesthouse
DAY 6

Hanle to Umling La Pass (19,024 ft) and Back — The Highest Road on Earth

140 kmALTITUDE: 5,798m / 19,024 ft (Umling La summit)

A dedicated day for the summit, which is exactly why this itinerary keeps two nights in Hanle instead of running Umling La as a tired detour. We ride out via Photi La towards Umling La (5,798m / 19,024 ft) — the highest motorable road in the world, built by the BRO and higher than Everest Base Camp. The air holds roughly half the oxygen of sea level, carburetted engines lose power, and we keep the summit stop short and deliberate. Photos at the BRO milestone, then back down to Hanle the same day for a second night of stargazing. Note: Umling La sits in a sensitive border zone and access depends on your permit endorsement and army clearance on the day — we confirm both before you ride out.

🏨 Night Stay: Hanle Homestay / Guesthouse
DAY 7

Hanle to Leh via Loma Bend & Chumathang Hot Springs

290 kmALTITUDE: 3,500m / 11,500 ft

The long ride home, and a scenic one — we follow the Indus downstream instead of climbing back over Chang La. Permits are checked and stamped at the Loma Bend checkpost, then the road runs through Nyoma and Mahe to Chumathang, where sulphur hot springs steam straight out of the riverbank and are worth the stop for tired legs. From there it is smooth tarmac along the Indus through Upshi and past Thiksey Monastery into Leh. Farewell dinner in town and a proper hot shower after five days of high-altitude riding.

🏨 Night Stay: Ladakh Bikers Base Camp Hotel, Leh
DAY 8

Departure — Leh Airport Drop

0 kmALTITUDE: 3,500m / 11,500 ft

After breakfast we drop you at Leh airport for your flight out. Leh flights depart early and are weather-sensitive, so keep the first half of the day clear and avoid booking a tight same-day connection out of Delhi. Time to bid adieu to an adrenaline-filled holiday — but not without packing some precious memories.

IF YOU HOLD A FOREIGN PASSPORT, READ THIS FIRST

Part of this route is inside a restricted border zone that India does not open to foreign nationals — no permit, no agency and no fee changes that. Other operators sell these segments to overseas riders anyway. We would rather lose the booking than have you turned back at an army checkpost.

  • ChushulDay 5Indian nationals only

We re-plan this day for you and confirm the replacement route in writing before you pay a deposit.

  • Umling LaDay 6Indian nationals only

The Hanle programme in this itinerary — the observatory, the monastery ridge and the dark-sky night — is open to you on a Protected Area Permit and runs as written. The out-and-back to the Umling La summit does not.

  • LomaDay 7Indian nationals only

We re-plan this day for you and confirm the replacement route in writing before you pay a deposit.

Open to you on a Protected Area Permit: Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri and Hanle. Hanle needs a minimum of two foreign nationals on one permit, a stay in a registered Astro-stay, and printed copies for every checkpost — all of which we arrange as a registered Leh agency. Full permit rules for foreign riders

OR RIDE SOMETHING WITH NOTHING CLOSED ON IT

If riding the whole itinerary as written matters more to you than this particular pass, these run to a similar length and a foreign passport covers every kilometre of them — no substituted day, no checkpost turnaround.

Frequently Asked Questions

The maximum altitude reached on this tour is 5,798m (19,024 ft). We ensure proper acclimatization and carry emergency oxygen on all group tours.

Yes. Every permit the Leh to Leh 8-Day Ladakh Bike Expedition needs is arranged and included in the package price — a Protected Area Permit for foreign passport holders, an Inner Line Permit for Indian nationals, plus environmental fees. You send us passport and visa copies; we process them at the Leh magistrate's office. One thing a permit cannot do: Chushul, Umling La and Loma are inside a restricted border zone closed to foreign nationals outright, so no PAP is issued for them at any price. If you hold a foreign passport we re-plan those days and confirm the replacement in writing before you pay a deposit.

Not all of it. Chushul, Umling La and Loma lie inside a restricted border zone that India keeps closed to foreign passport holders, including NRI and OCI cardholders. No Protected Area Permit is issued for those sectors, so any operator offering them to an overseas rider is selling a ride that ends at an army checkpost. What is open to you on a Protected Area Permit: Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri and Hanle. Hanle carries conditions — a minimum of two foreign nationals on one permit, a stay in a registered Astro-stay, and printed copies for every checkpost — and we handle all of it as a registered Leh agency. We re-plan the affected days for foreign riders and confirm the replacement route in writing before any deposit is taken. If riding a published itinerary in full matters more to you than this particular pass, our Zanskar expeditions cross no restricted sector at all — the 8-day Zanskar Valley Expedition, the 9-day Leh to Srinagar via Zanskar & the Suru Valley, the 10-day Leh to Leh Zanskar Circuit via Shinku La are all open to a foreign passport end to end, with nothing substituted.

Yes, every guided expedition is accompanied by a professional Ladakhi tour leader and an experienced local mechanic to handle any high-altitude breakdowns.

Eight days is the shortest comfortable window to cover Ladakh's full high-altitude circuit from Leh without cutting acclimatization. This itinerary uses day 1 for mandatory rest at 3,500m and day 2 for a short local sightseeing loop while permits are processed, leaving five riding days for Khardung La, Nubra Valley, the Shyok route, Pangong Tso, Hanle and Umling La, and a final day for the airport transfer. A 6-day version of the same geography is possible but drops the Leh acclimatization day and rushes Umling La.

Yes for Indian nationals, no for foreign passport holders — and that second half is the part most operators leave out. Day 6 is a dedicated out-and-back from Hanle to Umling La (5,798m / 19,024 ft) rather than a detour squeezed into a transit day, and for an Indian national it needs an Inner Line Permit endorsed for the Hanle-Umling La sector, which we arrange and include; access on the day still depends on Indian Army clearance and weather. Umling La sits in a restricted border zone near Demchok that is closed to foreign nationals outright. There is no Protected Area Permit for it, and no agency can obtain one. If you hold a foreign passport, Hanle itself is open to you on a PAP — the observatory, the monastery ridge and the dark-sky night all stand — and we re-plan day 6 and confirm the replacement route in writing before you pay a deposit.

Yes, for a fit rider comfortable on a 350-450cc motorcycle. Most of the route is paved, the daily distances are moderate except the 290 km final day, and the first two days are deliberately built as acclimatization. The technical sections are limited: unbridged water crossings on the Shyok river route on day 4, and loose gravel on short stretches near Khardung La and Umling La. A tour leader rides with the group and a backup vehicle carries luggage, spares, oxygen and a first-aid kit throughout.

Mid-May to late September, with June, July and September the most reliable months. Khardung La and the Changthang roads to Hanle and Umling La are usually snow-free by mid-May; late July and early August can bring flash floods and landslides on the Shyok stretch; September offers the clearest skies for Hanle stargazing and the least traffic, with night temperatures near freezing at Pangong and Hanle.

RIDE FOOTAGE

Why 8 Days Is the Sweet Spot From Leh

This is the itinerary most Indian riders end up booking, and the reason is simple arithmetic on leave days. You fly into Leh and fly out of Leh, so not one day is spent reaching Ladakh on the Manali or Srinagar highway — all five riding days are spent inside the landscape people actually come for. Eight days is also the shortest window that covers Khardung La, Nubra, Pangong, Hanle and Umling La without cutting acclimatization: day 1 is mandatory rest at 3,500m and day 2 is a short local loop while your permits are processed.

  • ✈️ No wasted leave: fly-in, fly-out from Leh (IXL) — no 2-day highway approach.
  • 🫁 Two acclimatization days up front: rest day, then a low-stress 80 km sightseeing loop before any pass.
  • 🏔️ Umling La gets its own day: two nights in Hanle, so 19,024 ft is a dedicated ride, not a tired detour.
  • 🌊 Shyok river route: Nubra straight to Pangong with water crossings — no backtracking over Khardung La.
  • ♨️ Chumathang hot springs return: the Indus valley road home instead of re-crossing Chang La.

Planning This Trip: What to Know

  • 📅 Best months: mid-May to late September. June, July and September are the most reliable; late July-early August carries flash-flood and landslide risk on the Shyok stretch.
  • 🛂 Permits: Inner Line Permits for Nubra, Pangong, Hanle and the Umling La sector are processed by us in Leh on day 1-2. Carry your original Aadhaar or passport.
  • 📵 Connectivity: only postpaid Indian SIMs work in Ladakh, and there is effectively no data past Nubra. Download offline maps in Leh.
  • 🏍️ Riding experience: suitable for first-time Himalayan riders comfortable on a 350-450cc bike. Longest day is 290 km on day 7.
  • 🌡️ Pack for freezing nights: Pangong and Hanle drop near 0°C after dark even in mid-summer.
