THE ZANSKAR EXPEDITIONS

Almost every Ladakh motorcycle tour sold to foreign riders is the same trip: Khardung La, Nubra, Pangong, back to Leh. It is paved, it is beautiful, and in August you will queue for the photograph. Zanskar is the other Ladakh — a valley with one road in, a glacier at the top of the pass, and a monastery you can only reach on foot.

WHY RIDE ZANSKAR INSTEAD OF THE STANDARD CIRCUIT

01

One road in, and almost nobody on it

The Nubra-Pangong circuit carries the heaviest rider traffic in Ladakh and is paved end to end. Zanskar has a single road down the valley floor, and on a good day you will pass more Himalayan marmots than motorcycles.

02

It is genuinely unpaved

Shinku La at 16,580 ft is loose, rutted and crossed by glacier melt that rises through the afternoon. The Suru side breaks up past Parkachik. This is not a paved tour with a gravel photo stop — it is a surface that asks something of you for days at a time.

03

Real self-sufficiency

No fuel between Darcha and Padum — roughly 200 km. No mechanic outside our own convoy. No mobile signal for most of the valley. The support vehicle carries the spares, the fuel reserve and the oxygen because there is nowhere to buy any of it.

04

The Drang-Drung Glacier

Pensi La does not have a view of a glacier in the distance. It opens directly onto one — a tongue of ice running off the Zanskar range, visible in full from the top of the pass, and the single most photographed thing our riders come back with.

05

Phugtal, which you cannot ride to

A monastery built into the mouth of a cliff cave, home to around seventy monks, reachable only on foot along a river gorge — two hours each way from Purne. Three of these four routes include the walk. Nothing on the standard circuit compares.

06

Zanskari Buddhism, still working

Karsha stacked up a cliff, Sani on flat ground by a pond, Stongdey above the fields, Rangdum alone on a plain. These are functioning monasteries in a valley that was cut off by snow for six months a year within living memory, not restorations on a tour-bus route.

AND THE ONE NOBODY ELSE WILL TELL YOU

India keeps parts of the Ladakh border zone closed to foreign passport holders — NRI and OCI cardholders included. No Protected Area Permit is issued for those sectors and no agency can obtain one. Several of the most heavily advertised Ladakh circuits cross them anyway, and the rider finds out at an army checkpost.

Of the 11 multi-day expeditions we run, 6 have no restricted sector anywhere on them — and every Zanskar route is among them. Every kilometre of a Zanskar itinerary is open to you on a standard Protected Area Permit, which we process as a registered Leh agency. Nothing is swapped out of your itinerary and no day is re-planned. How to check any operator on this

FOUR ROUTES, ONE VALLEY — PICK BY YOUR FLIGHTS

The riding through Zanskar is much the same on all four. What differs is where you start, where you finish, and whether you cross Shinku La — which is what decides the flights you book and how technical the trip is. Pick on that.

WHO SHOULD NOT BOOK THIS

We would rather turn a booking away than put a rider on the Shinku La side who should not be there. There is no bail-out from the middle of Zanskar: the nearest hospital is Kargil, a day away on a bad surface, and the support vehicle can only move as fast as the road allows.

  • First long-distance motorcycle trip. Do the Leh circuits first — they are paved, they are close to Leh, and they are a genuinely good week.
  • No experience on loose surfaces. Three of these four routes cross Shinku La unpaved, with glacier melt running across it, at 16,580 ft.
  • A group with very mixed ability. The convoy rides at the pace of its slowest rider, and on a nine-hour day in Zanskar that is a real cost to everyone else.
  • Anyone who needs to be reachable daily. There is no mobile signal for most of the valley and no wifi worth the name in Rangdum or Purne.
  • Riders unwilling to carry their own risk. Travel insurance covering motorcycling above 4,000 m and emergency medical repatriation is mandatory on every Zanskar departure.

BRINGING A GROUP?

All four run as private guided expeditions on your dates — you are not joining strangers. Tell us your group size, your riding history and the two weeks you can take, and we will tell you which of the four fits and which does not.
