Zanskar Gorge Expedition: Manali to Leh via the Chilling Road
Zanskar in seven days instead of twelve, because the road finally goes through. The Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road follows the Zanskar river gorge — the line the frozen Chadar trek takes in winter — and joins Padum to Leh in a single 182 km riding day. Until it opened, riding out of Zanskar to Leh meant Pensi La, Rangdum and Kargil: roughly 450 km and three days. You still enter the hard way, over the unpaved Shinku La, and you still get Padum, Karsha and the Phugtal trek. You simply do not spend three days on highway to get home. Not one restricted sector on the route: every kilometre is open to a foreign passport on a standard Protected Area Permit.

Detailed Itinerary
Arrival in Manali, Bike Handover & Briefing
Arrive in Manali independently. Motorcycles are assigned, saddlebags fitted, and we run a short test ride up the Solang valley. The evening briefing covers Shinku La and the gorge road — there is no fuel between Darcha and Padum, and no mechanic between Padum and Nimmu.
Manali to Darcha (Atal Tunnel & Lahaul Valley)
Through the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel into the dry Chandra basin, then tarmac through Tandi — the last petrol pump before the Zanskar leg — and on through Keylong to Darcha. Tanks and jerry cans are filled here.
Darcha to Padum (Crossing Shinku La)
The hardest riding day. The tarmac ends at Darcha and a rough, unpaved trail with glacier-fed water crossings climbs to Shinku La (5,054m / 16,580 ft) — technical, exposed, and with no rescue infrastructure. We descend through the Zanskar gorges into Padum. Full off-road gear and prior technical-terrain experience are mandatory.
Padum Local (Karsha & Sani Monasteries)
A recovery day at altitude. We ride to Karsha, the largest monastery in Zanskar, and to Sani on the valley floor, and see Zanskari village life in a valley a fraction of Ladakh's riders ever reach.
Phugtal Cave Monastery Trek Day
We ride the Lungnak gorge to the Purne roadhead, then walk about 5 km each way to Phugtal, a monastery built into a cave mouth in a sheer cliff. Riders who prefer rest can stay in Padum.
Padum to Leh via Chilling (The New Gorge Road)
The reason this itinerary exists. The Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road runs the length of the Zanskar river gorge — the same corridor the frozen Chadar trek follows in winter — past Chilling to the Indus confluence at Nimmu, then along the highway into Leh. It is a long day and a remote one: no fuel and effectively no phone signal between Padum and Nimmu. Before this road opened, this single day was three, by way of Pensi La, Rangdum and Kargil.
Departure from Leh
The expedition ends after breakfast. We organise transfers to Leh airport (IXL) for onward flights. Riders with an extra day can add Khardung La or the Sham valley.
OPEN TO EVERY PASSPORT, END TO END
No part of this route crosses a sector India keeps closed to foreign nationals. On a Protected Area Permit — which we arrange as a registered Leh agency — a foreign passport holder rides every kilometre of this itinerary exactly as written, with nothing swapped out and no day re-planned. That is worth checking before you book anything in Ladakh: several of the most advertised circuits include a pass or a lake that only Indian nationals may reach. How to check any operator on this
Frequently Asked Questions
The maximum altitude reached on this tour is 5,054m / 16,580 ft. We ensure proper acclimatization and carry emergency oxygen on all group tours.
Yes, all permits (Inner Line Permit for Zanskar, and Protected Area Permit where applicable for foreign nationals) required for the Zanskar Gorge Expedition: Manali to Leh via the Chilling Road are arranged by our team and included in your custom quote.
Yes. The Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road through the Zanskar river gorge connects Padum to the Leh-Srinagar highway at Nimmu via Chilling, and we ride it on this expedition. It is 182 km and about five hours — one riding day. Before it opened, leaving Zanskar northward meant Pensi La, Rangdum and Kargil: roughly 450 km and three riding days. The road crosses no pass; it follows the river, dropping from about 3,570 m at Padum to about 3,120 m in the gorge before climbing to Leh. Some map and navigation apps still do not show the connection, or still route Padum to Leh the long way via Kargil — the road is nonetheless open, and the GPX file on this page is built from its actual mapped geometry. It is remote: no fuel and effectively no mobile signal between Padum and Nimmu.
Yes. We publish the full Zanskar Gorge Expedition: Manali to Leh via the Chilling Road route as a free GPX 1.1 file covering 550 km, split into 6 separate tracks — one per riding day — with 18 named waypoints for every pass, fuel stop and overnight halt. Every track point carries an elevation value, so the climb profile is real rather than flat. The road geometry comes from OpenStreetMap and the elevation from SRTM terrain data. It opens in Garmin, Komoot, OsmAnd, Ride with GPS and Gaia. Download it from the route map section of this page by entering your email address.
Yes, every guided expedition is accompanied by a professional Ladakhi tour leader and an experienced local mechanic to handle any high-altitude breakdowns.
